The cops there were savage animals under Apartheid; and, regardless of racial hierarchies, the white population of South Africa truly had it coming, they had it coming so hard, after decades of vicious lies and whorish nastiness.
From the perspective of global history, I can say this: They were lucky to be allowed to live. In most cases, a fully justified war of revolution, with millions up against the wall, was the smell in the air.
I’m saying this as a white guy who lived there for a year and mostly dealt with white people, white people I liked. There’s a great book, called “Waiting: The Whites of South Africa”, written before the fall of apartheid. Summed it up nicely, at least from the English point of view (the English there are their own, more or less, separate caste: They had the money and the brains, the Afrikaners the numbers and, well, the farms, definitely not the brains: Stereotypically stupid, as seen by 1990′s English South Africans).
These white Anglos had the same guilt that the generation after WWII did in Germany:
They knew they had it coming. They knew they deserved to be overthrown in a revolution and that the little sweet facts they bragged about (Highest white home ownership in the western world, etc.) were indictments against them. They knew how bad it was in the townships. They knew about the endless “suicides” in the cop shops with their terrifying blue lights signaling Don’t Fucking Go In There Or You’re Dead. They knew about the terrors in the night and the Disappearances and they knew the cops were doing all this in their names.
