Feminism Killed Chivalry

When I was in junior high-school I dated my first boyfriend, Andy. He was wonderful but he was shorter than I by a good 4 inches. Everyone at school made fun of us and I eventually broke up with Andy due to all the catcalling. It’s funny but it’s one of the only regrets I have in my life. (As a side note too, Andy went on to date a friend of mine from high-school and the two of them are now happily married with 3 kids.)

I have lived in New York for 8 years. For 8 years I did the New York dating scene. I met people through work, events, sports games, online dating, even a Moxie event or two but I never met “the one.” Then, just over a year ago, I went through a breakup and thought to hell with it, I’m joining Match.com. One of the first people they matched me with was a guy named Charles. Charles was only 5’9″ and my first response was, “how could I date someone that short when I’m 6″ taller than he in heels?!?” My girlfriends, thankfully, convinced me to go out with him. It’d be a relaxed date, since how could I be interested in someone who wasn’t my physical type?

Fast forward a year: Charles, as it turns out, is the man of my dreams. He is someone I never would have met had I let my prejudices (height, occupation – he was in the Army and I’m an artist) get in the way. Three months ago he asked me to marry him and it was one of the best days of my life. We will be married next September.

And the best part is? When we attend cocktail parties and I wear my 3-4″ heels, he loves to look across the room and say, “yeah, that 6’3″ model? she’s with me.”
